TOP TEN reasons to run the 2015 Fort Half

10.  New Course
Now in its 6th year, the Fort Half Marathon will be run as a 6.55-mile loop course in 2015. After running the first loop, runners will turn around and run the second loop in the other direction. This will be an awesome way to see the front runners and to cheer on your fellow runners and friends. The new course will still have some hills, but will offer some great views of Fort Atkinson, especially from the Riverwalk!!

9.  Big Time Event in a Small Town
Known for its small town comfort, natural beauty, eclectic shopping and fine dining, Fort Atkinson is a great community that has a lot to offer. Come to run the Half Marathon, but stay to experience Fort Atkinson!!!

8. Swag
Where do we start? The Fort Half will again offer a one-of-a-kind t-shirt and medal, the usual food and drink at the finish, along with ICE COLD TOWELS…a runner favorite! On the course, you’ll find 7 water stations, an ICE station (with freezy pops) and a Gel station.

You also get a ticket to the Pancake Breakfast located in Luther School and 2 drink tickets for the post-race festivities…with all this food and drink, it’s a good thing you will be running 13.1 miles.

7. “Take me out to the Fort Half”
Since its inception, our race has been run on the same weekend as Generals’ Baseball Fest, so this year we decided to incorporate the baseball theme. Join in the spirit of the event by wearing a baseball “costume” (at least a jersey and hat), and you’ll be entered into a drawing for one of four $25 gift cards for Paddy Coughlin’s Irish Pub.

While running, feel to sing along to the tune of “Take me out to the ballgame:

Take me out to the Fort Half,
Take me out to the start
Buy me some pancakes and Gatorade.
I don’t care if I run in the shade.
Let me run, run, run for the whole race.
If I don’t win it’s ok.
So let’s run, one, two laps you’re done
Down at Ole Jones Park.

6. Kid’s 1.1-mile run
New this year is a kids 1.1-mile run on Friday night. Signup is only via paper registration, which you can find on our website. The kids will have 2 options:

Option 1: ...
Join a free 8-week “training” program leading up the race. Participate in 12 training runs to qualify to “complete” their very own Half Marathon on Friday night. Each participant that completes 12 runs and the 1.1-mile race on Friday night will receive their very own Fort Half Marathon Medal.

Option 2:
If your child wants to run Friday night only, that is great!! We welcome all kids to participate in this great event.

4. Relay Anyone?
For those who don't want to run a complete half marathon in June we are offering the relay for the first time. Find a teammate and decide who gets to run first. Each person will run the loop, one in each direction

3. Run for a reason.
We decided to help out some local non-profit organizations by donating a portion of your registration fees. When signing up for the race please select one of the following organizations.

Haumerson’s Pond Project-Local organization raising money to restore a local pond tradition with a warming house for ice skating.

Jefferson County Humane Society-County wide organization looking out for the needs of our animals.

United Way of Jefferson & North Walworth Counties
-Local organization assisting with the needs of 32 local agencies.

2. Fort Half Marathon Scholarships.

When the committee first organized the Fort Half Marathon, one of our goals was to bring back the Chamber Scholarship Program. Over the past five years the Fort Half Marathon has donated over $25,000 to graduating Fort Atkinson High School students. For five years we have offered two $2500 scholarships, to one male and one female pursuing an education at a Wisconsin 4-year college. Last year, an additional scholarship was offered to a student with the intention of graduating from a vocational or technical program. Please help us continue this worthwhile endeavor. Run with us on June 20th!

1. Views like no other!!
We have arranged for special tours of the Fort Atkinson Historic Water Tower. With your race bib, you and a guest will get entry to the top of the water tower to take in 360-degree views of Fort Atkinson. The Tower will be open from 9:30 to 11:30 am on race day only. Talk about a post-race photo opportunity!!!
